Intuitively you would think of how many people go to mosques and how many women wear hijab. Then you broaden your evaluation to see whether the law system in your country is based on islamic rulings or not. and when you think of the law system you think "Cutting the hand of the burgler and lashing the drunk".

 

This is how we learned to think when talking about islam. And this is why Islam today is different than Islam at the time of the prophet.

 

When you think of your approach of evaluation you would see how many islamic/universal concepts you miss. What about "justice" "shoora" "prosperous life" "respect for humans" "having goal in your life" "organized system". Aren't these also the core of islam. Don't we read the quran and see in how many verses God threatened the tyrant and promised him scary punishment? Don't we read in the quran how much dignity God gave to human being?

 

What about "cheating" and "corruption". Don't we know verses or ahadeeth saying how unislamic these things are.

 

Why don't we add these things to our criteria in evaluating how much "islamic" our countries are. And frankly Can't we see how much these things are violated in our "islamic" countries more than other criteria terms.

 

I recall an insightful saying made by the great "mujadded al deen" the scholar muhammad 3abdoh when visiting europe. He said "I can see here "Islam" without muslims. And we have back home "muslims" without islam".

 

subhan allah you can now understand how the era of the rightfully guided imams(al khulafa arrashedeen) is considered a golden era in islam. You can see "prosperity" "justice" "human respect" "freedom" applied and practiced and you can see "people going to mosques" and "people offering prayers and fasting wholeheartedly". Unlike some countries where they cut the hand of the burgler and have high unemployment rate and force the people to pray and people have doubts wether God exists or not.

 

Anyways... I read the following article which summarizes the recent speech of al qaradawi. I think it's really illuminating and relates to what i was pondering upon.

وقال القرضاوي في لقائه السنوي بالصحفيين، والذي عقده صالون إحسان عبدالقدوس مساء أمس الأول: «المشكلة كبيرة، فاللصوص الصغار يدخلون السجون، والحرامية الكبار يرمحون ويمرحون» مضيفاً: عندما سمع الحسن البصري ضجة في الخارج قالوا له إنه سارق أمسكوا به فرد عليهم: «يذهبون بالسارق الصغير إلي السارق الكبير».

وأكد القرضاوي أن «حاميها حراميها» متمثلاً في قول الشاعر: «وراعي الشاة يحمي الذئب عنها.. فكيف إذا كان للرعاة ذئاب» موضحاً بأن هناك من يملك القناطير المقنطرة وهناك من لا يملك الملاليم

وتابع: «مشاكل التخلف والأمية والفقر والمرض والاستبداد انتشرت في العالم العربي الذي تحكمه أنظمة تكبت حُرياته وتكتم أنفاسه»، مشيراً إلي أن مسيرات مليونية تم تنظيمها في دول أوروبية احتجاجاً علي الحرب ضد العراق في حين أن الشعوب العربية عجزت عن تنظيم مسيرة عُشر مليونية قائلاً بسخرية: «نحن ناس مسالمون ومطيعون نُؤمر فنُطيع فنحن مؤدبون».

وقال القرضاوي: «عندنا قوة بشرية غير مستغلة فيجب أن نغير من تفكيرنا ووعينا في حكمنا علي الأشياء، مشيراً إلي أننا نقول: إن الزنا والخمر من الكبائر ولكن هناك أشياء يجب أن نضعها مثل التخلف والأمية والمحسوبية وتزييف الانتخابات ونهب المال العام من الكبائر».

 

in another part:

وأكد القرضاوي أن الأمة تحتاج في مرحلتها المقبلة إلي الإصلاح والتغيير قائلاً: «توفير الحرية عندي مقدم علي تطبيق الشريعة الإسلامية، ففي مناخ الحرية وظلها نضع الإيمان ونضع الإنسان وفي ظلال الإنسان نضع النهضة».

 

another part :

 

وأضاف: «لا نستطيع تطبيق الشريعة إلا في مناخ من الحرية، لا نريد أن يساق الناس بالعصا، نُريد الناس أن يدرسوا الإسلام عن بصيرة واقتناع، ونُريد الإسلام التجديدي ونجمع بين الأصالة والمعاصرة أو السلفية والتجديد».

ونبه القرضاوي إلي أن الحرية تؤخذ ولا توهب، فيجب أن يعلم حكامنا أن أمة من العبيد لا تستطيع أن تنهض، وتظل عالة علي الغير، مؤكداً أن حسن نصرالله انتصر بالحرية التي وفرتها له الدولة اللبنانية والتي سمحت له بأن يتدرب ويبني الحصون،

 

and in another part:

وانتقل إلي الحديث عن تطبيق الشريعة الإسلامية، موضحاً أن الشريعة ليست هي تطبيق الحدود فقط، فهي: «الحق والشوري والعدل» وأن تكون مع الضعيف ضد القوي وأن تؤمن الناس من الجوع وتأمنهم من الخوف، الشريعة هي إقامة حياة طيبة للناس وحياة حرة مطمئنة وألا يدخل علينا كلاب الليل وزوار الفجر، مستدركاً: «الشريعة لا تطبق كما ينبغي فهل طالبان تمثل الوجه الحقيقي للشريعة؟!».

وأضاف: «في نيجيريا يطبقون الشريعة ويقطعون يد السارق وأقول شّغلوه قبل أن تقطعوا يده».
